The initial part of our itinerary was easy. Gretchen (Chris' Mom) and Doug spend winters in Mexico and were just about ready to go back to B.C. so we decided to join them for their last days in Ajijic, Mexico. Following that, we knew we wanted to be in Venice, Florida by March 23 to attend a wedding! For everything else, we were just winging it. Chris likes to say ‘plan’ is a four letter word. I generally like to have a little bit of an idea of where we will be heading. But it seems to me that lately he is the one picking out hotels and planning where we will be heading at least a week in advance.

Ajijic – After a busy four weeks of packing the house, moving, unpacking, and an intense weekend of typing a huge transcript, we began packing for the big adventure about four hours before we had to leave for the airport. On March 5, after about three hours of sleep and a very early morning flight, we arrived in Guadalajara, Mexico and found our way to our first stop, San Antonio Tlayacapan - which I usually refer to as Ajijic because that is where Gretchen and Doug used to live and it’s so much easier to say.

It was SO much fun seeing Gretchen and Doug and meeting some of the people they spend their winters with. We spent our days wandering around exploring this charming, friendly little town on Lake Chapala. We learned how to ride the local bus, learned a few words in Spanish, and we also learned a few reasons why so many Canadians and Americans love to spend winters there - mainly the friendly people (locals and expats), it is relatively inexpensive, and the climate is just about perfect!

We learned that when you reserve a rental car for Florida from Mexico, it can be a lot cheaper than booking it from Canada! Since we were heading to Florida in a couple of weeks and wanted to rent a car, we spent some time surfing different rental sites until we finally discovered a Mexican website which we could use to reserve a car from Budget/Avis for roughly a third of what we thought it should cost! Jackpot... car = rented!!

We also talked a lot about what we would do once it was time to leave Florida. Low-and-behold, we found a cruise that was repositioning from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean. It was leaving Ft. Lauderdale in early April and heading to Rome, Italy for a VERY reasonable price. Hmmm, two weeks on a cruise then springtime in Europe? We can do that = booked!!

After a short five days in Ajijic we were moving on. Time to jump onto a bus!
